Favorite Wine Connoisseur Destination
The Badia a Passignano winery in Chianti Classico Italy represents gastronomy, culture and history. The winery is owned by Antinori and surrounds a genuine abbey that is owned by monks of the Vallombrosian order. The abbey and its owners have been producing wine at least as far back as 891 and perhaps since 395. The pinnacle of power was during the Middle Ages.
Learning Center
Notable personages taught at the abbey, including Galileo who lectured on science here during 1587. The monks relished learning and were students of literature and music. Vast libraries are still in existence today that were collected by the monks of the order. Chianti Classico wineries maintain a leadership position in the world of wine production, just as the region was a learning center.
Notable Wines
The famous Classico Riserva di Badia a Passignano wine is one of the best known beverages in the Western world. It is the only wine produced here. It was the monks who cared for the estate until the Antinori winemaking family purchased the estate and the extensive cellars that lie under the abbey. The wine casks still hold the product of the wine harvest and are aged there. Badia a Passignano winery in Chianti Classico Italy
Generations of Family and Vines
In 1987, the 26th generation of vintners from the Antinori wine-making family came into control of the estate and winery. It consists of 50 hectares of Sangiovese plus vineyards of Cabernet and Syrah grapes. In 1983, a vine dating from one thousand years earlier was discovered near the vineyards. Chianti Classico wineries provide the most consistent draw to the region.
