Italian Wineries

Thousands of Wineries in Italy

In Italy, nearly 6,000 wineries and many more wine products can be visited and enjoyed.  Italian wineries are a mix of some world famous brands and those that are best categorized as boutique wines. Setting out to visit all the vineyards would be the work of a lifetime.  Fortunately, our tours help you to identify and enjoy the best of the best.

A History of Wine Production

Wineries in Italy date back into history. Although the Italians didn't invent wine, they have demonstrated a passion for it that is perhaps at the highest level.  The Mesopotamians are credited with the earliest production of wine.  The Italians have embraced the concept more than almost any other group of people. Almost every region of Italy has wineries and wine production facilities.  The wide number of wine varieties is a testament to the interest and skill of the Italian peoples in high quality wines.

The Influence of the Greeks and the Etruscans

Wine making in south Italy and on the island of Sicily is credited to the Greek influence in the area. Asia Minor, specifically the Etruscans provided the knowledge and tools to central Italy for the growth of Italian wineries. The Romans refined the process of wine making in areas such as the use of the wine presses to increase yield.

The Roman and Christian Era

Romans greatly appreciated wine; both slaves and the wealthy drank it with every meal.  The alcohol content of wine was higher than today's versions. The wineries in Italy during this period were typically run by monks. The quality of wines continued to be high until the 19th and 20th century when it dropped slightly. The government now takes an active role in establishing and maintaining quality standards.

The standards for Italian wineries are very high. Wineries must undergo rigorous examination about alcohol content, production level, quantity, aging and taste. Only the highest grades are able to be certified under the regulations.
